The Presidency has announced plans to introduce approximately 2,700 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and tricycles by May 18, ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s one-year anniversary in office on May 29.
According to Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the federal government aims to establish 100 conversion workshops and 60 refuelling stations across 18 states before the close of 2024.
In a statement titled ‘Presidential CNG Initiative Set for Rollout,’ Mr. Onanuga stated, “Nigeria will soon join the ranks of nations with significant fleets of CNG vehicles as we take our initial steps.”
“All necessary preparations have been made for the delivery of the first batch of essential assets for deployment and launch of the CNG initiative, scheduled ahead of President Tinubu’s administration anniversary,” he added.
The Presidency outlined that approximately 2,500 CNG-powered tricycles will be available before May 29, with plans to deliver an additional 200 units before the anniversary date.
Furthermore, the government aims to produce over 600 buses in the initial phase of the project, with completion anticipated by the end of 2024. This initiative aligns with efforts to promote environmentally friendly transportation alternatives and advance sustainable development objectives.
