The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has granted new permits to several companies, including Golden Penny Power Limited, MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, and Havenhill Synergy, for mini-grid electricity generation.
These licenses, issued in the first quarter of 2024, aim to boost the nation’s energy capacity and diversify the electricity supply through off-grid solutions.
NERC approved a total of nine new off-grid generation licenses with a combined capacity of 109.69 megawatts (MW) and three trading licenses. Among the beneficiaries, Golden Penny Power Limited received a license to construct six off-grid gas plants across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states, with a total capacity of 100MW. MTN Communications Nigeria Limited was also granted a permit to build four captive generation plants in Lagos State, adding 15.94MW to the state’s electricity supply.
In addition to these developments, the commission issued nine captive power generation permits in Q1 2024, with a total nameplate capacity of 52.57MW. Companies such as SweetCo Foods Limited, African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, West African Ceramics Limited, Royal Engineered Stones Limited, and Armilo Plastics Limited were among those licensed to generate captive power for their operations.
Other companies that received mini-grid licenses include Daybreak Power Solutions, TIS Renewable Energy Limited, Auro Nigeria Private Limited, Watts Exchange Limited, Centum Dopemu Energy Services Ltd, and DMD Electric Limited, all based in Lagos State.
These licenses align with Section 165(1) (m) of the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers NERC to award mini-grid concessions to renewable energy companies. This section allows companies to generate and distribute electricity within specific geographical areas, with the obligation to serve customers who request service.
NERC’s continued focus on renewable energy and off-grid solutions reflects its commitment to expanding access to reliable electricity across Nigeria. By issuing these permits, the commission is promoting the development and utilisation of renewable energy sources, which are essential for achieving sustainable energy goals in the country.
