Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has projected that Nigeria’s digital economy will generate $18.3 billion by 2026.
Speaking at a recent media engagement forum on the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill in Abuja, Dr. Tijani emphasised the transformative potential of the digital economy for the nation.
He highlighted the success of Nigerian unicorn companies such as Flutterwave, Jumia, Andela, and Interswitch, which have demonstrated the strength and potential of the digital economy.
“The digital economy recorded about $5.49 billion in revenue in 2019. This sector is projected to generate up to $18.3 billion by 2026,” Dr. Tijani stated.
He explained that the Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill, once passed into law, would provide a legal framework to accelerate progress in the digital economy agenda. This bill aims to support the growth and transformation of Nigeria’s economy through the application of digital technology in all facets of life across the country.
The Director-General (DG) of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Malam Kashifu Inuwa, represented by the Director of Standards, Guidelines, and Frameworks Department, Mr. Emmanuel Edet, stated that the bill would enhance the use of the digital economy throughout the country, benefiting both the government and the private sector.
The implementation of the bill is expected to span all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, ensuring widespread adoption and integration of digital economy initiatives.
