The Federal Government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has successfully installed power plants in six federal universities, marking a significant step in its mission to provide reliable electricity to critical sectors of society.
This development is part of a broader effort to strengthen the nation’s infrastructure and enhance the quality of life in rural and underserved areas.
During a recent briefing in Abuja, REA’s Managing Director (MD), Mr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, provided an update on these achievements to the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun.
Mr. Aliyu revealed that REA installed power plants in the University of Abuja, the University of Maiduguri, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Federal University Gashua in Yobe, the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, and the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna.
Mr. Aliyu also provided photographic evidence of the newly established power plants, highlighting the transformative impact of REA’s initiatives on these institutions and their surrounding communities.
He emphasised the importance of these electrification projects in reshaping the educational landscape and driving economic development in Nigeria. The REA’s work is particularly crucial in rural and underserved regions, where reliable power can be a game-changer for both individuals and institutions.
Mr. Edun, in his response, lauded the REA for its remarkable accomplishments. He stressed the critical role that electrification plays in driving Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
According to him, the agency’s efforts are not just about providing electricity; they are about empowering communities and creating economic opportunities that will have lasting benefits for the entire nation.
“REA’s efforts are not just lighting up homes and institutions; they are illuminating the future of Nigeria by improving livelihoods and creating economic opportunities,” Mr. Edun stated
He also highlighted the importance of raising public awareness about the positive impacts of the agency’s work, noting that the continued success of these initiatives is vital for sustained economic development.
The power plants installed at these universities represent more than just infrastructure improvements; they are a symbol of the government’s commitment to ensuring that all regions of Nigeria can participate fully in the nation’s growth.
As REA continues to expand its reach, the benefits are expected to ripple across the country, leading to improved livelihoods, increased economic opportunities, and a brighter future for Nigeria.
